| Lyndhurst- 10 miles West of Southampton. It is the home of Alice Liddle - the girl who inspired "Alice in wonderland". A Liddle family friend, Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), would often tell stories to the children when he came to visit. They asked for stories when they spent the afternoon riding in a canoe, so he made up a one for Alice, who was 9 years old. Each time he came they wanted a further episode until finally the book was born. |
